FORT ST JOHN - On March 4th, the Doig River First Nation and the City of Fort St. John signed a Memorandum of Understanding regarding the Development and Servicing of Doig River First Nation-owned land in the City of Fort St. John building off of the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation and Communication signed in 2010.
This Memorandum of Understanding recognizes that together, through well-planned development and servicing, both parties can support a prosperous local economy, provide an opportunity for cultural expression within a diverse community setting, maintain a healthy environment, and ensure a strong and safe social fabric.
The Doig River First Nation is a unique developer in the City of Fort St. John and this Memorandum of Understanding ensures that the implementation of development and servicing processes is aligned with the broader intent of government to government relationship. It also establishes a framework for seamless integration of Doig River First Nation lands within the City of Fort St. John.
“Doig River is pleased to sign this Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Fort St. John for municipal services. We value the leadership taken by the City of Fort St. John in building strong partnerships and relationships with our Nation that will improve the overall economic stability of Fort St. John and the quality of life for our membership and the residents within the City,” said Doig River First Nation Chief Trevor Makadahay.
“This Memorandum of Understanding continues building on our relationship with our First Nation neighbours and ensures we continue to work towards our shared goals. I am very pleased with the work done by our respective Councils and staff to bring us to this point through understanding and learning. We are eager to see these future developments enhancing our community and providing local economic opportunities,” stated Mayor Lori Ackerman.
