District of Elkford Wins Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ International AwardDistrict of Elkford
ELKFORD - At the annual Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ (FCM) Conference in Quebec City last week, Mayor Dean McKerracher proudly accepted the FCM’s 2019 International Award for Institutions on behalf of the District of Elkford.
The win is a result of Elkford’s contributions to FCM’s Sustainable and Inclusive Communities in Latin America (CISAL) International Program. The Institutional Award is given to a Canadian local government that has demonstrated exceptional commitment and leadership in FCM’s international programs. A large part of Elkford’s win can be correlated to the exceptional work and contributions that Elkford’s Chief Administration Officer, Curtis Helgesen, made over the past four years, which was evident in his own individual nomination for the 2019 Mike Badham Award. This award is given to an individual whose contributions are above and beyond in terms of innovation, creativity, engagement and leadership.
The CISAL Program is a five-year initiative (2015 - 2019), funded by Global Affairs of the Government of Canada and implemented by the FCM, designed to support local governments in Latin America in their efforts to manage the impacts and benefits of mining development, and to promote sustainable economic growth for its citizens. Throughout the Program, Elkford has participated in seven missions to Colombia and Peru and has hosted Colombian and Peruvian delegations twice in Elkford, once in 2015 and subsequently in 2017.
“The District of Elkford is extremely proud and humbled by this award, and it was a true honour to be nominated in two categories among such an elite group of communities and individuals. Elkford’s work in Columbia and Peru was very rewarding, and to see the growing engagement and collaboration with the municipalities we worked with was truly heart warming” stated Mayor McKerracher.
