MIABC WEBINAR: The COVID-19 Pandemic – Legal and Risk Management Issues for Local Governments
Apr 1st, 2020 10:00 AM PST

Local governments around the province are grappling with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on their communities. The Provincial Health Officer has issued orders curtailing public gatherings and the operation of some businesses. The Province has declared a state of provincial emergency, and the Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General is expected to issue orders under the Emergency Program Act. What are the legal risks facing local governments as they deal with this crisis?

In this webinar Jeff Locke and Peter Johnson of Stewart McDannold Stuart will discuss the COVID-19 pandemic and the legal and risk management issues that should be top of mind for local governments including:

• Emergency powers – what local governments can and cannot do
• Provincial orders – does local government have a role in enforcement?
• Enforcing social distancing requirements at the local level
• Risks of acting and not acting
• Making tough decisions in uncertain times

Please note that as the COVID-19 situation is changing daily, the content of this webinar is also subject to change.
