Waste Compliance Officer(Auxiliary Position)

The District of North Vancouver has one auxiliary position available for a Waste Compliance Officer with the Solid Waste Department. This position will be full-time from July to October 31st, with ongoing part time work from November 1st. This position involves public contact and routine manual work carried out in support of the District’s cart set out program. Work duties include patrolling the District independently by vehicle or on foot to monitor for residential garbage and organics carts set out prior to collection day. The successful incumbent will investigate complaints, respond to resident inquiries, educate on best waste management practices, issue warnings, track repeat offenses, and liaise with municipal staff. Work is performed under general supervision with considerable independent judgement and action exercised within established guidelines.
The successful applicant will have exceptional customer service and dispute resolution skills with the ability to deal with members of the public effectively while providing information and education on cart and wildlife attractant management. Your ability to accurately complete work related documentation is accompanied by your ability to monitor and identify situations of non-compliance and ability to follow-up on repeat violations. Further, you are proficient with MS Office applications, Word and Excel and are able to prepare internal records and detailed reports and perform research.
Requirements for this position include completion of Grade 12 and some related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. A valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License is also required. The successful applicant must be able to walk short and long distances, including uphill, in all weather conditions, and be comfortable working alone in the dark.
The union rate for this position is $28.25 per hour (2019 rate). From July to October 31st hours of work will be 4:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., Sunday to Thursday, with a one hour break.
