Rate of Pay
$25.65 per hour (plus 14% in lieu of benefits)

The Assistant Park Naturalist conducts environmental interpretation programs and special events, and staffs and operates CRD Regional Parks Nature Centres.

The applicant or incumbent will be required to undergo a criminal record check in order to work in this position and to report to their supervisor if any criminal charges are laid against them that may be related to their employment in this position.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assists in the delivery of environmental interpretation and education programs
  • Researches natural/cultural history themes appropriate to each program.
  • Creates programs based on theme, park environment, and characteristics of an audience.
  • Conducts environmental interpretation programs.
  • Assists in the promotion of CRD Regional Parks environmental interpretation programs.
  • Purchases required supplies for each program on supervisor’s approval.
  • Assists in School Programs, Community Outreach Programs, Children’s Programs, Guided Interpretive Walks, Roving Naturalist Programs, Special Events/Community Events, etc.
  • Assists in the operation of Nature Centres.
  • Assists Naturalists with Special Events/Community Events and delivers interpretive programs. 
  • Promotes these events to audiences in other CRD Regional Parks environmental interpretation programs
  • Informs the public of park bylaws as per training sessions provided.
  • Participates in reviews of school programs and summer programs and makes recommendations for future programs.
  • Follows all policies, procedures and standards of the CRD
  • Performs other related duties as required.

  • High school supplemented by postsecondary studies in natural sciences, education, performing arts or related disciplines, and a minimum of six months related experience.
  • Must be willing to obtain Occupational First Aid Certificate (Level 1)
  • Demonstrated skills in interpretation of natural and cultural history (program design and delivery).
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Working knowledge of CRD regional parks system and its local natural and cultural history
  • Experience working with children, family and adults
  • Physically fit, and able to consistently carry out a range of active environmental interpretation programs, including challenging hikes over various terrains.
  • Ability to consistently perform the physical requirements of the position, including large equipment set-up such as tents, displays and tables.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and cohesively in a team environment.
  • Ability to provide own transportation to primary work locations as required.
  • Must possess a valid BC Driver’s License
