The Staff Solicitor is responsible for preparing, negotiating, reviewing and approving commercial contracts, procurement documents, and land development related agreements, such as airspace parcel agreements, servicing agreements, access agreements, covenants, statutory rights of way, easements, road closure by-laws, Land Title documents and other related documents. Responsibilities include preparing leases, licences and purchase and sale agreements, overseeing the completion of property acquisitions and dispositions and providing legal advice and opinions on municipal and corporate matters. The successful applicant will prepare and review by-laws and by-law amendments as required. In addition this position provides assistance to the City Solicitor and guidance to administrative personnel engaged in legal and clerical functions. Performs related work as required.

Requirements include an LL.B. or J.D. from a recognized law school along with current membership, in good standing, with the Law Society of British Columbia. A minimum of 3 to 5 years of current experience in the practice of law is required, together with solid experience in real estate transactions, leases and commercial contracts, land development and legal drafting. Thorough knowledge of the Land Title Act, Local Government Act, Community Charter, Environmental Management Act and related legislation is necessary. Technical knowledge of the LTSA electronic filing system, BC Land Title system and BC Online is essential. The ideal candidate will have the ability to think conceptually and strategically, through understanding and analyzing situations while considering complex interrelationships both within the City as well as between the City and other stakeholders. The ability to lead the work of staff, build and maintain effective working relationships, and possess sound file management techniques is also vital to the role.

This is a temporary full time opportunity from April 6, 2020 to November 26, 2021.
