We are looking for a forward-thinking, innovative Engineering Technologist to join our team on a full-time basis.  This position is located in our Maple Ridge Operations Centre which is a front-line provider for public works services, including the management of the Roads and Fleet, Water Distribution, Sewage Disposal, Storm water management, Electrical Mechanical Systems and Procurement.  Operational focus is on health and safety of our citizens; protecting the large investment in the public works and underground infrastructure; protecting the environment; maintaining service levels; providing essential and convenience features, while providing these services at a minimum cost to taxpayers.

The Operations Centre is a positive, fast paced, dynamic environment where you will interact with Engineers & Technologist, Contractors, City Maintenance Crews, Certified Operators and the Public in the provision of municipal services.     

It is imperative candidates are able to provide innovative solutions, have good logic and problem solving capabilities to non-standard conditions, situations and occurrences; as well as independently resolve technical problems and policy issues. Extensive knowledge, consistent judgment and an innovative approach is necessary.

Project tasks will be primarily field related and driven by the maintenance and operational targets.  The successful candidate can expect projects and tasks within the Waterworks, Sewer, Drainage, Roads, and Electrical Mechanical divisions.  Projects will include pressure reducing stations, pumping stations, gravity main and water distribution, soils and condition assessment, water quality, material purchasing and estimating, maintenance databases and provide additional technical field support to Operators, Maintenance and Construction crews. 

You will require a diploma program from an Institute of Technology in an appropriate discipline plus have sound related Municipal engineering experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  Experience in the operation, maintenance or construction of public works utilities is preferred

You will have knowledge of Municipal design and engineering standards.   Knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment used in construction, installation and maintenance of Municipal utilities such as water and sewer systems.  Knowledge of engineering mathematics, models and engineering plans, specifications, and data related to the work.  You will be proficient with Microsoft Office, spreadsheets and databases and have an understanding of AutoCAD.  Knowledge of budgeting and standard costing procedures related to engineering and operations.

You will have the ability to: research, develop, schedule and administer Municipal construction projects, prepare cost estimates, and assist in the compilation of annual and long range program budgets.  Prepare preliminary designs for specific public works services, and to review drawings and plans for technical accuracy and conformance to Municipal guidelines, by-laws and specifications. Prepare plans, understand contract specifications, forms and related data for tender purposes and to read and interpret same.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of internal and external contacts and to provide technical information, advice and interpretation of engineering requirements, policies, procedures, proposals and related matters to same.  Deal effectively through verbal and written communication regarding public complaints, requests and troubleshooting.  Analyze and evaluate the technical and financial impact of proposed developments and to make recommendations that are consistent with applicable requirements, standards, regulations, by-laws and related criteria.  Prepare and maintain records, statistics, reports and correspondence related to the work.

You will have Certification or eligibility for certification as an Applied Science Technologist within the Province of British Columbia. A valid class 5 B.C. Driver’s License valid is required

Projects will be assigned by various departments including Waterworks, Sanitary and Drainage, Roads and Electrical / Mechanical utilities within the Operations Department.
 
This position requires strong leadership with an ability to work in a team setting, along with excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skill and the ability to multi-task and prioritize to meet tight deadlines.
