Government Affairs Specialist

The government affairs specialist supports the government and key stakeholder relations components of critical files, providing advice and guidance on strategic messaging, recommended approaches, issues management and relationship tracking, particularly, but not exclusively, as they relate to port authority-led infrastructure projects and tenant-led development projects. Reporting to the manager, government and stakeholder relations, this position provides support on other government and stakeholder related tasks as required, including meeting and event scheduling and arranging, and the development of plans and strategies, reports, briefing notes, presentations and other materials.

This role will:
  • Working with the Manager and Strategic Advisor, Government & Stakeholder Relations, supports government, regulatory agency and stakeholder communications and engagement activities, including participating/facilitating in meetings, planning and executing outreach programs, and tracking and managing issues
  • Under direction, develops and supports the implementation of outreach, advocacy and other communications strategies, plans and tactics
  • Regularly interacts with government representatives at all levels, ensuring communications goals are met
  • Ensures communications activities are aligned with other departmental and organizational objectives and initiatives
  • Provides general communications support on an as needed basis, which may include planning and/or support of special events, government and media relations, business communications, tours and presentations, photography, reports, general research, budgets and information requests.
  • Tracks engagement activities, action items and outcomes.
  • Compose, proofread and format correspondence, presentations and spreadsheets. Assemble, prepare, collate and distribute as required.
  • Organize meetings and events, including booking meeting rooms/venues, arranging catering, purchasing gifts, preparing meeting materials. Prepare and mail invitations and coordinate RSVPs. Communicate details to participants.
  • Perform other assigned duties as required

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in political science, along with a minimum of four years of demonstrable experience in provincial and/or federal government relations and in developing government relations strategies around complex projects. Demonstrated, recent experience working in government with elected and public service officials or equivalent volunteer experience is required. Strong networking and interpersonal skills, and strong knowledge of existing federal and provincial government structures, processes and priorities is considered an asset. Exceptional research, writing and analytical skills required. Must have excellent communication skills, both oral and written.  Computer literacy is required.

This position is ideal for a self-motivated individual with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy and the ability to liaise effectively and positively with both staff and outside contacts. Must be a strategic thinker with the ability to analyze individual initiatives in the context of the bigger picture, identify issues, provide advice and escalate situations when necessary. Must have an excellent command of the English language, both oral and written. Must be a team player with a customer service focus. Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and flexibility to perform multiple tasks are required.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Normal office conditions with occasional evening, weekend and off-site work, which may include travel outside within or outside B.C. Flexibility to occasionally respond to issues during non-working hours.
