Software Developer (Programmer / Analyst)

What is the role of the Software Developer (Programmer / Analyst) at the MFA? 

Reporting to the Manager of IT & Strategy and working closely with the Senior Programmer/Analyst, the Software Developer (Programmer/Analyst) is responsible for the development, maintenance, and support of the MFA’s inhouse software systems. The Software Developer works with the MFA team to identify and understand the internal needs of the organization and upgrade the external needs of its clients to ensure the system properly supports both user groups. This involves analyzing business needs and enhancing the functionality, efficiency, stability, and security of the MFA’s central software asset called the Financial Management System, or FMS. The Software Developer will design, develop, upgrade, maintain, code, test, and debug this system and associated systems, as well as provide backup support to the Senior Programmer/Analyst as required.

Who is the ideal candidate to join our team? 

Our ideal Software Developer (Programmer / Analyst) candidate will have: 
  • An undergraduate degree in Computer Science, or related degree.
  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience in coding, design, and administration of software systems and database architecture.
  • Experience with relational databases and SQL; ability to understand and modify database schemas, write performant queries and debug performance problems.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and maintaining software systems using the Java EE platform.
  • Experience with Linux-based environments; understanding of the usage and principles, and able to work effectively at the command line.
  • Experience in web application development; solid understanding of protocols, languages, and security.

What other qualifications are we looking for in this role?
  • Understanding of accounting concepts is an asset.
  • Experience with programming technologies such as JavaScript, XML, JSON, HTML, CSS, SQL, bash.
  • Knowledge of the Tomcat Java EE application server.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Well-spoken, articulate and strong written communication; ability to collaborate effectively with MFA staff, clients and external service providers.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and trouble-shooting skills; ability to anticipate needs and translate Business Logic into system processes and functionality.
