Environmental Technologist I

Recycling and Waste Management Division
(Regular Full Time)

Position: The Recycling and Waste Management Division of the Cowichan Valley Regional District is seeking a regular full time Environmental Technologist I. Reporting to the Manager, Recycling and Waste Management, the Environmental Technologist I will be responsible for assisting in performing a wide variety of technical tasks related to solid waste management and environmental initiatives, including: environmental monitoring; processing applications for solid waste systems; disseminating information; and, developing and coordinating waste reduction and environmental initiatives and programs.  

Qualifications: Graduation from a recognized technical institute or college in a related field (at least a 2 year diploma); preferably general experience in environmental studies or civil/environmental engineering in a local government setting. Eligible for membership in the ASTTBC as a technologist/technician, or a combination of education and appropriate training and experience. Preferably one (1) year related job or cooperative work experience in a similar field. First Aid Level I with CPR C and possession of a valid BC Class 5 Drivers' License. Knowledge of the CVRD’s operations; recycling and waste management related bylaws, Environmental Management Act (including Contaminated Sites Regulation) and other contaminated sites related regulations and standards; computer operations and the ability to deal with a variety of software packages including, MS Office programs and other software; solid waste management and diversion processes/procedures and environmental issues; all phases of recycling, including collection, processing, and marketing and the management of solid waste reduction programs. Ability to communicate effectively through written materials, including staff reports, advertisements, education manuals and workshop guides, public notices, brochures and pamphlets; understand and apply laws, regulations, agreements and procedures as appropriate; establish and maintain courteous, tactful, diplomatic working relationships with other employees, general public and regional Board members; be proficient in the use of grammar, spelling and punctuation; effectively operate a PC in a Microsoft Office environment (Access, Word and Excel), emails and Outlook; and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Effective public speaking and presentation skills, including delivering information and education to a wide variety of audiences from children to industry professionals, plus layout and design skills for printed public and industry information materials is required. 

Hours of Work:  The hours of work are 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This position may be required to attend some evening and weekend meetings. Flex time is offered with this position.

Salary: This regular full time union position (CUPE Local 358) has a salary range in three steps $33.38 - $34.33 - $35.37 per hour (2019 rates). A comprehensive benefit package is offered with this position.
