Utility Worker II

(Temporary Full Time Position)

Position: The South Cowichan Facilities Section of the Facilities and Transit Management Division at the Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) is seeking a Utility Worker II for a temporary full time position at the Kerry Park Recreation Centre from mid-July to end of September 2019. Reporting to the South Cowichan Facility Coordinator, the Utility Worker II is responsible for the cleanliness, sanitation, housekeeping and maintenance of the facilities and grounds. Main duties include cleaning, room and equipment set-ups and tear-downs, facilities maintenance, grounds work, sports field facility maintenance, incidental security work, and assisting in the preparation and maintenance of ice surfaces.

Qualifications: Applicants must have Grade 12 or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience. A minimum of one year of experience in cleaning, housekeeping and facility and grounds maintenance and one year of experience working in a trade (carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing etc.) are required. A valid Occupational First Aid Level 1 or equivalent certificate, Class 5 BC Drivers’ License, WHMIS certification (provided by the employer), and Ice Facility Operator/Refrigeration Operator Certificate are required. A Building Service Worker Certificate and/or Ice Making Courses would be an asset. Knowledge of cleaning and sanitation principles, routines and products, of facility repairs and grounds work equipment and materials as well as facility and grounds operations. Applicants must have knowledge of the principles and practices of a trade and of common tools and materials used in various trades, as well as knowledge of safety routines and evacuation contingency plans and the physical capability to ensure the safe evacuation of the public in the event of an emergency. The successful candidate will possess the ability to: establish and maintain working relationships with other employees, instructors, general public, users and program participants; work independently and as part of a team; and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Applicants must have to ability to familiarize, remain current with, interpret, and follow CVRD and any other applicable Federal or Provincial rules, regulations, policies, and procedures including Worksafe BC and the BC Health Standards Act.

Hours of Work: Rotating shifts of 40 hours per week. Due to the nature of the work, it will be necessary to work a variety of shifts including days, nights, and weekends. Days off will change with the rotating schedule. The rotating shifts may be subject to change to meet operational requirements.

This temporary position is expected to run from mid-July 2019 to end of September 2019.

Salary: This temporary full time position is unionized (CUPE Local 358) and has a wage range in three steps, $27.51 - $28.31 - $29.15 per hour (2019 rates). The successful applicant will be paid the Operations Attendant rate ($29.70 - $30.52 - $31.42) when working alone in the facility. The increase in pay to the Operations Attendant rate will not be in effect during the summer shutdown of the Ice Plant.
