The Deputy City Manager’s Department is looking for a politically astute lawyer to join its fast paced team of professionals.  Reporting to the Assistant City Solicitor, the Staff Lawyer will be expected to provide advice on a broad range of topics of interest and importance to a local government. In so doing, the successful candidate will draw on his or her in-depth knowledge of the Local Government Act, Community Charter and other relevant legislation, as well as experience working with municipalities, regional districts or other government agencies. This position will support and take direction from the City Solicitor and Assistant City Solicitor and work in collaboration with the other lawyers and professionals in the Legal Division.

This is primarily a solicitor’s position; however, an interest in supporting or managing litigation matters would be an asset. The Staff Lawyer will provide advice on issues such as land use zoning and regulation, municipal licensing and permitting, bylaw and contract drafting and general municipal governance and will negotiate, draft and review various development and real estate documents, including land exchange and purchase and sale agreements, land encumbrances and transactional documents. The Staff Lawyer will work closely with City planning, engineering, real estate and project management professionals to contribute to the efficient processing of private development applications. Familiarity with land use planning processes and development-related legal issues is desirable. Given the broad nature of the work, the ideal candidate will have experience in some of all of the following practice areas: municipal law, real estate, commercial law, procurement and construction, freedom of information and privacy, administrative law, dispute resolution and litigation.  This position will draw on the incumbent’s legal expertise viewed through a political and business lens. 

The successful incumbent will possess a LLB or JD degree with a call date of no less than five years, preferably with experience providing legal advice to local governments or in-house experience. You must be a member in good standing of the Law Society of British Columbia or be entitled to practice law in a reciprocating jurisdiction.
