The Regional District of Nanaimo has an employment opportunity for a permanent full-time Emergency Planning Coordinator in the Emergency Services department.

Reporting to the Manager of Emergency Services, the successful candidate will be responsible for the coordination and facilitation of emergency management activities. General duties for this position will include, playing a key role in the operation of the Emergency Operations Centre, development and revision of emergency plans, operating the emergency public information systems, preparing written reports, public education, preparing training and exercises, volunteer recruitment and assisting with the development of policies and procedures.  

The successful candidate will be expected to work a flexible schedule to meet operational requirements including weekends and evenings as necessary.

Applicants should possess an undergraduate degree in Emergency Management, Business Administration or related field, plus three years’ experience preferably in a local government setting; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Certificate in Local Government Administration, courses in emergency management and Incident Command System training would be an asset. Possession of a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License is required. The incumbent must posses excellent interpersonal, problem solving, and communication skills; ability to plan, organize, develop and implement action plans; and have knowledge of the BC Emergency Management System and Incident Command System.

This is a permanent full-time (35 hours per week) Union Position. The (2019) rate of pay is $32.85 to $34.58. The position offers an attractive benefits package as provided within the collective agreement between the Regional District of Nanaimo and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 401.

  • Undergraduate degree in Emergency Management, Business Administration, or related field
  • 3 years’ experience, preferably in local government setting
  • Certificate in Local Government Administration
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License is required
