$31.78 per hour (plus 14% in lieu of benefits)

The Park Maintenance Worker 5 provides leadership, guidance and direction as well as daily project coordination. The position performs a variety of routine and non-routine park maintenance duties relating to environmental protection, facility construction, structural maintenance and janitorial services. The incumbent provides leadership and project coordination in dealing with both internal and external resources and contractors.
The anticipated length of this term assignment is approximately 5 months (April – September)
This position requires an acceptable criminal record check. The applicant/incumbent will be required to undergo a criminal record check in order to work in this position and to report to their supervisor if any criminal charges are laid against them that may be related to their employment in this position.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Leads and directs work teams in park facilities’ development and maintenance tasks in an efficient, professional and safe manner.
- Organizes and prioritizes daily staff work schedule in conjunction with the Park Operations Supervisor or designate.
- Assists with training and provides orientation and direction to work teams, including the safe use of equipment.
- Provides field training/guidance to park maintenance staff in the application of park regulations.
- Contributes to the review of staff performance while fostering a positive work environment.
- Provides written and verbal reports relating to park operations.
- Responsible for the construction/inspection/maintenance/repair of park facilities and structures.
- Ensures hazardous conditions are identified and appropriate steps are taken to mitigate the hazard. Responsible for notifying the Parks Operations Supervisor and may be required to recommend an action plan.
- Provides guidance, direction and support to internal and external resources.
- May take a lead on project coordination including overseeing and coordinating resources, problem solving and identifying solutions with project manager and operations supervisors.
- Ensures park trails and facilities are maintained to department standards of safety and quality by conducting documented inspections on a regular basis and completing repairs as required.
- Conducts vegetation management.
- Conducts routine clean-up of all park facilities and grounds.
- Operates a variety of CRD Park vehicles, trailers, equipment and work boats on lake surfaces.
- Operates work boats on lake surfaces.
- Provides information to park visitors and enforces park regulations as required in a positive, courteous and professional manner.
- Ensures field supplies and materials’ inventories are maintained and researches costs to purchase equipment and field supplies.
- Participates in the suppression of brush and forest fires as required in accordance with Worksafe BC and BC Ministry of Forest fire suppression regulations.
- Performs duties of other Park Maintenance Worker positions.
- Ensures all work is performed in accordance with Worksafe BC.
- Follows all policies, procedures and standards of the CRD
- Performs other related duties as required.
- High School graduation and the completion of technical and supervisory courses related to parks operations and five years’ related experience in parks, forestry or construction work, as well as direct experience guiding and directing work teams.
- Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal and customer service skills are required.
- WorkSafe BC approved chain saw bucking and falling training, Occupational First Aid Level 1 and WHMIS training are required.
- Willing to obtain S100 forest fire suppression, WorkSafe BC transportation endorsement, Pleasure Craft Operators Certificate, swift water rescue and hazardous tree assessment, and Confined Space Entry certificates
- Sound knowledge of CRD Regional Parks and parks systems,
- Sound knowledge of the methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment commonly used in parks construction, installation, repair and maintenance, including, horticulture and landscaping.
- Knowledge and understanding of WorkSafeBC practices/protocols, Workers' Compensation Act and OH&S Regulations and other relevant safety statutes.
- Experience in the operation and maintenance of small two-stroke and four-stroke engines.
- Ability to perform a variety of maintenance functions within regional parks.
- Knowledge of CRD Parks policies, procedures, regulatory bylaws and environmental issues related to and/or affecting Parks.
- Proven experience in public relations with team leadership and bylaw education
- Ability to use initiative, problem solve, use good judgement planning and organizing work
- Some computer skills required
- Ability to maintain clear records, documentation and log books.
- Physically fit and able to perform heavy manual outdoor work in all types of weather conditions.
- The successful applicant will be required to provide a driver’s abstract.
- Must possess a valid BC Driver’s Licence (Class 5).
