Refuse Truck Operator / Labourer
Up to 4 Auxiliary Relief Positions
If you are customer service driven, have a passion for helping the public and enjoy working on a team, the District of Saanich has an opportunity for you. The Public Works Division is looking for qualified Refuse Truck Operators. The primary assignment of this position is expected to be operation of automated, right hand drive collection vehicles and other related duties within the Solid Waste Services Section. When not working for Solid Waste Services the base position is an auxiliary relief Labourer as part of the Public Works call list. This means that the successful candidate may also be required to work as a Labourer for other sections, subject to qualifications of individuals and operational requirements. This organizational structure will be clarified further for any individuals who are selected for an interview.
Our ideal candidate for work as a Refuse Truck Operator will have completed Grade 12 or equivalent; have a valid B.C. Class 3 Driver’s Licence with air brake endorsement; one year previous experience in a related field; sufficient physical strength, stamina and coordination to perform heavy manual labour in all types of weather and previous collecting experience with automated, right hand drive vehicles.
As successful candidates may be required to work as a labourer for other sections, a valid Traffic Control Certificate is also required. Experience/skill/certification and ability in the following areas would also be beneficial: pipefitting water work and/or wastewater; operating backhoe; working in riparian areas including restoration and spills containment; water meter reading.
These are C.U.P.E. Local 2011 positions. Wages are variable and dependant on the assigned position. The highest rate of pay is Refuse Truck Operator at $31.82 per hour, and the lowest is Labourer at $26.87 per hour plus 13% in lieu of benefits. Other assignments in Solid Waste Services or as part of the call list may have hourly wages between that of a Refuse Truck Operator and a Labourer.
