Awards of Excellence

Bill Holtby (CAMA Board), Stephanie Felesky (United Way), The City of Calgary: Mayor Dave Bronconnier, Chris Branch & Kurt Hanson.

CAMA Board member Bill Holtby presented Mayor Bronconnier and the City of Calgary with the 2010 Willis Award for Innovation at a recent Council meeting for their After School program.  While various after school programs already existed in Calgary, program providers were working independently and in need of more funding.  The range and availability of critical hour programs had also not grown to match Calgary's population.  By working together, the City of Calgary and partner organizations were able to redirect $1.6 million in order to run the program.  No new funds were needed.  Parents and youth can easily find details about programs that interest them and/or that are close to home or schools.  For more information visit www.calgary.ca/afterschool.

The Willis Award for Innovation is presented for programs, projects or services that demonstrate exceptional innovation or meritorious intiative.

Mr. Patrick Moyle, Board Member, and Awards Chair will be launching the 2011 program in January.  This year an additional award category has been added for municipalities with a population between 20,001 to 100,000 therefore giving three categories:

  • Under 20,000
  • 20,001 to 100,000
  • Over 100,000

CAMA and CivicJobs.ca Work Together to Promote Local Government Employment

Victoria BC based municipal agency, CivicInfo BC and CAMA have formed a wonderful working partnership.  The not-for-profit organization’s mandate is to foster information sharing and shared services between municipalities, associations, and related agencies.  CAMA has utilized their expertise in reaching professionals through Job Scene.

This partnership ensures that when a member posts with the Job Scene, their posting is seen by two key audiences: CAMA members with a wealth of professional experience; and people from outside the sector who might not have considered a municipal career before.

Late last year, CAMA was one of the first municipal associations to join the CivicJobs.ca partnership.  Here’s how it works, and the benefits to CAMA members:

  • When a member posts a job with the CAMA Job Scene, the posting is cross-listed on the CivicJobs.ca website as well, for no additional fee.
  • Through the Job Scene, the member’s job is seen by hundreds of CAMA members across Canada.  Through CivicJobs.ca, the same posting also receives significant exposure to a public audience; viewed by thousands of people who are not already employed by a municipal or regional government.
  • When CAMA members purchase a pre-paid CivicJobs.ca package, and identify themselves as members, partial proceeds from the sale are returned to CAMA.  It’s a great way to advertise all vacancies, while supporting the activities of your professional association at the same time.

For more information, questions, or comments, please contact CivicInfo BC at 250-383-4898, or e-mail [email protected].  The price for a single job posting is $150.00 plus GST for CAMA members and $250.00 plus GST for non-members.

Call for Trade Show Exhibitors

Thank you to the CAMA delegates who participated in the 2010 Conference Survey and gave us feedback on the Trade Show Exhibitors. My goal is to keep the Trade Show dynamic and introduce new and innovative products and services that will benefit all municipalities. Please let me know if there is a specific company or service that you would like to see at the 2011 Trade Show. Or do you have a supplier that has a unique product or service that you think other members would want to know about? Drop me a line and let me know ([email protected]). I look forward to receiving your emails! Rose
