| Online Tool Kit Helps Workplaces Build Customized COVID-19 Health and Safety Plan |
The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) has launched a new customizable tool kit resource to help workplaces across Canada operate safely and prevent the spread of infection during the COVID-19 pandemic. Anchored by the COVID-19: Workplace Health and Safety Guide, the online hub provides one-stop access to more than 40 free resources to reduce the spread and protect everyone in the workplace. The guide includes information on the responsibilities of employers and workers, and what workplaces should do to control risks. | 2020 Environment Award – Between 20,001 and 100,000 Population Category |
 The City of Campbell River’s Rising Seas project has concluded with Council’s recent adoption of its first ever Sea Level Rise Action Plan. This project took a broad and proactive view of flood risk posed by future sea level rise and engaged the public in choosing appropriate responses that also promote environmental shoreline values such as ecology, access and views. Public outreach, youth engagement and dialogue with First Nations have been key project components.
The City hired coastal engineers to perform technical analyses, modelling extreme marine and weather conditions before factoring in future sea level rises. This resulted in a set of flood construction levels being defined for the entirety of the urbanized coastline, on which a future flood bylaw will be based. Analysis then went further and evaluated different feasible flood mitigation measures in various locations.
A design firm was also retained to produce colourful, locally-branded public engagement materials, including a series of primers, 3D models, videos and draft development permit guidelines. The City created a significant process to present options to the community and evaluate preferred future approaches according to public values, ensuring community buy-in. As the climate changes, coastal communities like Surrey, BC, can expect more flooding due to storm surge and sea level rise. By the end of this century, Surrey’s coastline may be a meter or more higher than it is today.
Understanding the importance and urgency in preparing for this new reality, Surrey developed a Coastal Flood Adaptation Strategy (CFAS) to help its communities become more resilient.
Any city can develop a strategy, but Surrey challenged conventional practice in developing CFAS. Surrey brought community and stakeholder voices into the decision-making process from the start. Surrey recognized that coastal adaptation planning involves making tough decisions & trade-offs about valuable assets, public funds & the future of existing communities.
Surrey developed CFAS with an innovative, five-phase planning process which included value based, community-driven decision making, supplemented with sound engineering analysis. Developed over three years, CFAS engaged over 2,000 residents and stakeholders including First Nations, farmers, environmental groups, governments, and private industry.
