COVID-19 UPDATE - 2020 CAMA CONFERENCE

Municipal Cybersecurity Best Practices Event -- CANCELLED
We regret to announce that  the upcoming the Municipal Cybersecurity Best Practices event on 26 March 2020 and the associated eSentire Cyber College on 25 March 2020 is being cancelled. The threat of the COVID 19 virus and the increasing restrictions on travel and participation in group activities has created uncertainty as to the level of participation in this event. As fulsome participation from municipal leaders was critical to achieving meaningful cybersecurity best practices, it has been decided to cancel the in-person event and are now exploring an online alternative and virtual activities.  More information will be available in the near future. If you have any questions please contact Randy Purse, Acting VP Future Workforce Development, TECHNATION at [email protected]
ADMINISTRATION & COUNCIL: COUNCIL MEETINGS
Recognizing the importance of political understanding in the role of senior municipal administrators, also referred to as political acumen, the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators (CAMA) launched a Political Acumen Toolkit.   This resource can be found at politicalacumen.camacam.ca

Over the next few editions of e-Brief we will be featuring each topic that is offered in the toolkit. Today’s featured category is the role of administrators in Council meetings.   Because of the public nature of Council meetings, the relationship between the CAO and Council becomes most visible here to other staff, the public, and the press who are often in attendance. Here are some key strategies for managing these highly evident interactions and you can learn more about them by visiting the Council-Administration section of the Political Acumen website:
  • Non-Verbal Communication
  • Seating
  • Role of Administration
  • Prepare, Prepare, Prepare
  • Council Agendas
Resources Downloadable Resources:
Whenever possible, separate staff from elected officials in
Council Chambers or around the Council table.

Also, don’t forget to share some of your political acumen with your colleagues and sign up for CAMA’s Mentorship Forum which is available to all members at mentorship.camacam.ca. Sign up as a mentor, a mentee or just to network.  We hope that this website becomes the go-to networking site for CAOs and Senior Municipal Administrators across Canada. We have developed this forum as a tool to connect those who work in Canadian municipalities so that we can learn from each other and advance municipal governance throughout the Country. By providing a venue that fosters mentorship between experienced municipal managers and those who aspire to the role, we can help ensure the municipal leaders of tomorrow are well-prepared to take on the challenging and rewarding work of leading local government.
