| Welcome to the CAMA Mentorship Forum! |
This site is designed to connect new and aspiring leaders with experienced municipal managers to build capacity in local government. Similar to LinkedIn, but specific to municipalities, this site offers the ability to network with municipal CAOs and Senior Administrators across the Country. All regular CAMA members have access to this forum and can sign up as:
A Mentor – someone who is open to providing guidance or support to others.
A Mentee – someone who is looking to build a mentor relationship or who is new to senior municipal administration and needs support.
A Networker – someone who would like to connect and build relationships with other senior administrators in their region and across Canada.
Unsure where you fit? See the Mentorship section of the CAMA Political Acumen Toolkit for more information on the mentor-mentee relationship. The database of users is completely searchable allowing you to find connections based on municipality size, type, or location, and by topic of interest. To sign up, please fill out our registration form. This form will then be sent to CAMA for verification of membership and approval. Once you receive a confirmation email, please log in to begin building your connections!

Grant Program Continues To Create More Opportunities for Older Nova Scotians
Organizations who help older Nova Scotians lead healthy and active lives and stay involved in their communities can now apply for financial support under the 2019-20 Age-Friendly Communities Grant Program. The program provides funding of up to $25,000 for organizations to develop age-friendly communities - communities where policies, services and structures help older adults live safely, enjoy good health and stay active and involved. The first deadline for applications is Oct. 4. The grant program is one of more than 50 actions identified in SHIFT: Nova Scotia's Action Plan for An Aging Population. The plan is available at www.novascotia.ca/shift .

The Town of Saugeen Shores, ON was recognized with a 2019 CAMA Willis Award for Innovation, in the Under 20,000 population category, for its Shore Report Podcast.
The Shore Report is a municipal podcast with an objective to increase communication to residents and investors through an accessible and innovative solution.
A podcast is a web-based audio file, and in the case of the Shore Report, it does not include video and is not live. It is a pre-recorded, engaging, and informative conversation, which is then uploaded to two online platforms (iTunes and SoundCloud). These platforms are then leveraged through the municipal website and through social media.
Storytelling is identified as a priority within the Town of Saugeen Shores Communication Strategy. The free and inclusive access to a podcast provides an innovative solution to tell municipal project stories, local business stories, development success stories, and is a platform to discuss the economic opportunity provided by local industry.
As of April 2019, the podcast has 71 episodes posted, and has over 8,000 listens in 50 countries. This is an extraordinary reach for a community of less than 14,000 people, and the cost of $200 a year to produce makes it affordable for all municipalities. The City of Moncton, NB was recognized with a 2019 CAMA Environment Award, in the 20,001 to 100,000 population category, for its Avenir Centre – an energy-efficient, multi-use sports facility constructed on a brownfield property in downtown Moncton.
The Avenir Centre is a state-of-the art facility featuring a standard-size ice surface and space for concerts and exhibitions. The surrounding plaza includes community gathering areas and a skating oval. After evaluating several potential sites, the City selected a downtown property with the intent of revitalizing the area. It had historically been occupied by the Canadian National Railway from at least 1918 and then redeveloped into a shopping mall from the mid-1960's until 2012. Environmental Site Assessments revealed the presence of soil and groundwater impacts at concentrations above applicable environmental guidelines.
A Risk Assessment identified the requirement for on-site risk management measures including the construction of a soil vapor mitigation system to prevent migration of potentially harmful vapors from impacted soil and groundwater to the indoor air. By using this approach, the City avoided the excavation and transportation of impacted soil, preventing significant Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. The Centre was designed to be 45% more energy efficient than the National Energy Code and meets Green Globe Standards. To learn more about this award view the video here.

The City of Richmond, BC was recognized with a 2019 CAMA Environment Award, in the over 100,000 population category, for its District Energy Implementation – an effective tool for reducing community greenhouse gas emissions.
The City of Richmond saw the benefits of district energy in meeting sustainability goals within its Community Energy & Emissions Plan and implemented three district energy utilities (DEU): the multi-award winning Alexandra DEU (ADEU), the Oval Village DEU (OVDEU) which services the waterfront community around the world renowned Richmond Olympic Oval, and City Centre DEU (CCDEU).
Combined, these utilities have the potential to be the largest city-owned district energy system in North America. The City also incorporated a wholly-owned corporation, Lulu Island Energy Company, to manage these initiatives, which include an innovative public-private partnership to provide district energy services.
Using geoexchange technology, ADEU provides 100% low-carbon energy for space heating/cooling and domestic hot water to over 1,678,000 square feet (SF) of residential and commercial space, and emergency services. OVDEU, with over 1,890,000 SF connected, will transition to use a sewer heat recovery system as its anchor low-carbon energy source. CCDEU, currently under construction, will utilize low-carbon air source heat pumps to service over 4,800,000 SF of development. These measures optimize sharing of low-carbon energy capacity and maximize GHG reduction. To learn more about this award view the video here.

The City of Vaughan, ON was recognized with a 2019 CAMA Professional Development Award, in the over 100,000 population category, for Vaughan Innovators – a new employee engagement program. The Vaughan Innovators program began with an active pursuit to engage City of Vaughan employees in a meaningful way to advance the foundation of the organization’s Service Excellence Strategic Plan. Vaughan’s approach to Service Excellence is characterized by three interconnected strategic initiatives: Citizen Experience, Operational Performance and Staff Engagement. Styled like CBC’s Dragons’ Den, the Vaughan Innovator's program offers staff an exciting opportunity to present their ideas on how to improve processes and procedures in their everyday work.
The voluntary program was designed with staff engagement in mind: staff could bring forward any idea — no matter how big or small — within an investment limit of no more than $10,000. Time and resources (through training and working sessions) were provided for idea development. With help from a selection panel made up of peers, the winning idea is selected and granted funding and resources for implementation. Staff engagement is a measure of an employee’s emotional and intellectual commitment to an organization and can be characterized by the discretionary effort put into the organization to help it succeed and excel. By providing a forum to listen and act on staff-generated ideas, the Vaughan Innovators program directly pushes forward the foundation of the City’s strategic plan in an innovate, engaging way.  Think of who in your organization is ready for leadership development? Which neighbouring local government leaders would benefit from access to CAMA’s resources? We believe that shared wisdom leaves a lasting impact and we are seeking your support in growing our Association.Don’t forget about the “Making Life Happen” toolkit to attract the next generation of leaders to local government. The “Making Life Happen” program was created in partnership, with a mandate of raising awareness of local government with a specific focus encouraging younger Canadians to consider a municipal career. The next time you or your staff are asked to speak to local community groups or businesses, explain local government and the role of the CAO, or talk to students about municipal government careers, “Making Life Happen” will give you the building blocks for a memorable presentation.
