CAMA: AN ASSOCIATION FOR EVERYONE – SMALL, LARGE, URBAN AND RURAL!

CAMA POLITICAL ACUMEN TOOLKIT
Thank you to those CAMA members who took the time to complete the recent survey providing your thoughts on the topic of politcal acuity.  We had a tremendous response and gained some excellent feedback that will help us develop the Political Acumen Toolkit to be launched at the 2019 CAMA Conference in Quebec City in May.  If you have a case study on this topic that you would like to share and you feel would help other municipal employees, please contact Jennifer Goodine, CAMA Executive Director, at [email protected].

Political acuity is a skill – one that can be learned, but must also be practiced and honed. Bev Hendry, CAO to the Township of West Lincoln, CAMA Board Member-At-Large, and the Chair of the Political Acumen Toolkit Committee chats with Municipal World CEO Susan Gardner about the CAMA toolkit and how CAOs, now and in the future, can become more self-aware and bring this skillset into their everyday tasks.
NOVEMBER: FALL PREVENTION MONTH
November is National Fall Prevention Month and, according to fallpreventionmonth.ca, slips, trips and falls not only account for $3.4 billion in direct health care costs in older adults, but also send 215 of them to the hospital every day. This also makes up a number of claims and litigation municipalities experience.  Canadian organizations participate by planning initiatives and sharing evidence-based information on fall prevention. Together we can raise the profile of fall prevention and help everyone see their role in keeping adults active, independent and healthy as they age.
CAO SURVIVAL SKILLS POST-ELECTION
At the 2018 OMAA Fall Workshop in Muskoka, ON, Sandra Pupatello from Canadian International Avenues Ltd. chatted with Municipal World CEO Susan Gardner about “CAO Survival Skills Post Election” -- unique opportunities that come with a new term of Mayor and Council.  There are some great tips on political acuity, succession planning and women in leadership roles.
SMART CITIES CHALLENGE
The Smart Cities Challenge is a pan-Canadian competition open to communities of all sizes, including municipalities, regional governments and Indigenous communities (First Nations, Métis and Inuit). The Challenge encourages communities to adopt a smart cities approach to improve the lives of their residents through innovation, data and connected technology.  As part of the Smart Cities Challenge, Twenty finalists have been selected to go on to compete for four prizes:
  • one prize of up to $50 million, available to all communities;
  • two prizes of up to $10 million, available to all communities below 500,000 residents; and
  • one prize of up to $5 million, available to all communities below 30,000 residents.

IT'S OFFICIAL - THE 2023 CANADA WINTER GAMES ARE COMING TO PEI

The province of Prince Edward Island has been officially named host of the 2023 Canada Winter Games. The Games provide an opportunity for young people to compete in national winter sports competitions.  Thousands of visitors are expected to attend the 2023 Games, where athletes will participate in a wide variety of sports, including ice hockey, badminton, gymnastics, biathlon, cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, archery, snowboarding, boxing, squash, ringette, freestyle skiing, figure skating, judo, speed skating, squash, curling, wheelchair basketball and synchronized swimming.
