Congratulations to CAMA Board Member-Elect for Newfoundland and Labrador
During our recent election process for the 2018-2019 CAMA Board of Directors there were three positions available: one for Newfoundland and Labrador, one for Ontario, and one for Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
The Board of Directors is pleased to announce that we had one nomination for Newfoundland and Labrador. Thus, by acclamation, we would like to congratulate Dawn Chaplin, Chief Administrative Officer and Town Clerk for the Town of Torbay, NL. Dawn will take on her new role as the Board member for Newfoundland and Labrador after the CAMA Annual General Meeting being held on Tuesday, May 29th, 2018 in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Dawn Chaplin has been the Chief Administrative Officer and Town Clerk for the Town of Torbay since 2006. Dawn brings with her an extensive background in both the private and public sector. She has close to twenty years of experience serving as the Executive Director of the Newfoundland and Labrador Chamber of Commerce (1999-2000), the Community Development Officer with the Kittiwake Economic Development Corporation (2000-2002), and the Economic Development Officer with the Town of Holyrood (2003), and the Northeast Avalon Regional Economic Development Board (2003-2006).
Dawn holds a Bachelor of Science and has also completed the Public Sector Leadership and Management Development Program, and earned her Certificate of Achievement in Human Resource Development, all from the Memorial University of Newfoundland. She has also received her National Advanced Certificate in Local Authority Administration, Levels One and Two from Dalhousie University.
She currently serves on a number of municipal government Committees including the Joint Asset Management Technical Committee (Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment), the Diversity/Inclusion Task Force Member (Representing Region X – Canada), the International Institute of Municipal Clerks, and the Professional Municipal Administrators of Newfoundland and Labrador (Avalon Regional Director). She has also served as a Committee Member (Development, Insight, Fiscal Framework, Benchmarking, Membership Services) for the Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador.
Election for the 2018-2019 CAMA Board of Directors – Ontario and Manitoba & Saskatchewan
In accordance with the requirements of the CAMA by-laws, I wish to advise the membership that the 2018 Nominating Committee has received the following nominations for the position of Ontario that is available on the CAMA Board of Directors for the 2018-2019 year:

An election for these two positions on the Board of Directors is therefore required. Voting will take place commencing on Monday, April 30th, 2018 at 8:30 a.m. AST and finishing on Friday, May 4th, 2018 at 4:30 p.m. PST.
CAMA is a national organization and when elections are held, every Regular Member, regardless of the Province or Territory you work in, votes for the candidate of your choice in each respective jurisdiction. You are therefore eligible to vote for one nominee for Ontario and one nominee for Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The photos and bios of the above-noted nominees can be found above or on the CAMA website.
Further information regarding the procedures for voting will be distributed electronically to all CAMA members eligible to vote, prior to the commencement of the voting period.
Please also note that only CAMA members in good standing with membership fees paid for the current fiscal year (April 1st, 2018 to March 31st, 2019) will be eligible to vote.

2018 CAMA Conference Early Bird Registration ends April 1st, 2018
Registrations are still being accepted for CAMA's 47th Annual Conference being held in Fredericton, New Brunswick from May 28-30, 2018 at the Fredericton Convention Centre. This year’s theme is “Maximizing Opportunity – Mitigating Risk”. The early bird rate will be in effect until April 1st, 2018! Please note that the Day Trip to St. Andrews on Monday is SOLD OUT.
This year CAMA is pleased to partner with the Canadian Network of Asset Managers (CNAM) to provide you with the opportunity to attend a 1-Day Infrastructure Asset Management Awareness and Education Workshop, immediately before the Conference on Sunday, May 27th, 2018. Please keep this additional professional development opportunity in mind when booking your hotel accommodations. The Golf Tournament and other Pre-Conference activities will begin on Monday morning with the Conference Program ending after the President’s Dinner on Wednesday evening.

Register for the Conference by April 1st, 2018 and you will receive the Early Bird Rate.
Please note that CAMA members who are attending their first CAMA Conference are eligible for a $150.00 discount off the registration fee. If you would like some of your senior managers to attend the Conference and they are not CAMA members they can sign up for $137.50 (50% off the first year) and also attend the Conference for $525.00 as a First Time Delegate.

Golf Registration

Golf club rentals will be available for $30.00 (plus HST). Clubs must be reserved and paid for on the online registration form.

The Call for Volunteers is now open for members to serve on ICMA committees, taskforces, and advisory boards for the 2018 term. Member committees, taskforces, and advisory boards draw on the expertise and interests of a broad cross section of the membership to study issues of interest and importance to local government and to the profession. They also provide opportunities for member connection, networking, and professional development.

2017 FEATURED CAMA AWARD SUBMISSIONS
One Million Trees Mississauga
Through its Strategic Plan, Natural Heritage and Urban Forest Strategy, and Living Green Master Plan, the City of Mississauga identified the need to grow and protect its urban forest. Plans also identify the importance of engaging the public in this work. In 2013, One Million Trees Mississauga was launched to help achieve the City’s tree planting goals. The campaign goal is for one million trees to be planted in Mississauga by 2032. Trees are being planted to enhance the City’s green spaces and urban forest for future generations to enjoy. Trees are being planted by City staff, contractors, partners and volunteers on public and private property. Residents or groups who plant trees on private property can add it to the tree planting total and have it count towards the One Million Trees goal. Every year, thousands of volunteers get involved, new schools and businesses sign on and the program continues to grow. Some friendly competition is created through the Top 5 Planters website tally that tracks who has planted the most trees. Significant buzz about the program has been created through social media using #1MillionTrees, with residents and groups posting about their experiences. To date, over 240,000 trees have been planted.
The City of Mississauga submitted a nomination to the 2017 CAMA Awards of Excellence Program under the Environment Category for municipalities with a population over 100,000. City of Surrey Shade Tree Management Plan
Trees have numerous social, environmental, and economic benefits that contribute to improved quality of life for residents and visitors. Trees beautify our neighbourhoods, mitigate heating and cooling costs, reduce storm water impacts, improve air and water quality, increase commercial activity, and are linked to improved health of people. In the face of a changing climate evidenced by rising temperatures, longer more intense drought, and more frequent and damaging storms, the need to plant and manage a resilient inventory of shade trees has never been greater.
The City of Surrey’s Shade Tree Management Plan 2016 – 2036 provides a blueprint for the planning, design, development, and maintenance of the City of Surrey’s public property shade trees located in its parks and along its streets.
As of 2016, the City has over 75,000 street trees and 21,000 park trees. Presently, approximately 5,000 shade trees are planted each year. The City’s proactive management results in efficient use of resources and has resulted in, and will continue to result in, reduced costs; enhanced environmental, social, and economic benefits; and safer trees leading to improved public safety derived from healthy, mature trees.
