The CAMA Board had a tremendous amount of interest from the membership to serve on the Political Acumen Committee. We aim to have a balanced approach to regional and gender participation on our Committees. Particularly with respect to regional balance, we believe it is important that our discussions benefit from input from all of our regions and size of members` municipalities.

Help Develop a National Strategy for the Safe Disposal of Light Bulbs that Contain Mercury
On February 27-28, 2018, Environment and Climate Change Canada is hosting a two-day forum in Ottawa to begin collaboratively drafting a national strategy for safe and environmentally sound disposal of lamps containing mercury. Municipalities with experience dealing with this issue are invited to attend. ECCC can cover travel expenses for up to six municipal representatives. GLOBE Climate Leadership Awards
The 2018 GLOBE Climate Leadership Awards recognize businesses and municipalities taking action on climate change. There are categories for small and large municipalities. Applications are due by February 13, 2018 and should include a 30-45 second video describing your community’s accomplishments.
Winners will receive a complimentary pass to the 2018 Globe Forum in Vancouver, where the awards will be presented March 14-16. Watch Environment and Climate Change Minister Catherine McKenna announce the awards. You can also find more information on how to apply here.

City of Leduc Rooftop Solar Array
The City of Leduc is owner of Canada’s largest commercial rooftop solar array — 3,622 panels with total capacity of 1.1 MWh on the Leduc Recreation Centre (LRC), representing 14.5% of the facility’s annual consumption. The solar project includes a 2,000-panel, 630 kW solar array on the City’s Operations Building — enough to produce 100% of annual consumption, making the facility Net Zero.
Annual estimated total greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction is 1,090 tonnes. Under a 15-year lease, ENMAX will monitor and maintain the system.
Total system value is $3.7 million. City cost is $1.6 million. Estimated annual cost savings are $140,000 assuming electricity prices continue to increase, not including carbon tax. Estimated ROI is 15 years.
Installation of arrays, with an estimated lifespan of 40 years, was completed in mid-2016. Project foundations:
• a corporate goal focusing on reduced GHG emissions and reduced dependency on coal-fired power generation,
• a goal to provide a reliable, cost-effective, environmentally sustainable source of electricity at the two facilities,
• a goal to power the LRC with 100% clean energy during the 2016 Alberta Summer Games, and
• a shared vision and commitment to innovation.

City of Moncton: Corporate Climate Change Adaptation and Flood Managment Strategy
The corporate Climate Change Adaptation and Flood Management Strategy (Strategy) was developed by the corporate Climate Change Action Committee (CCAC), a multi-functional municipal staff team, to better understand the potential impacts of climate change on essential City services, infrastructure and the community, and identify actions that would help reduce the impacts. The strategy draws its conclusions from various sources including “The Climate Change Adaptation Measures for Greater Moncton Area”, a technical report prepared by AMEC in 2011.
The CCAC assessed four potential flooding scenarios with the use of a GIS mapping tool and emergency management software and identified infrastructure that would be affected under each scenario. Sixty nine short, medium and long term actions were identified and assigned to a specific municipal department for implementation. Actions deal with community education and consultation, partnerships, research and planning, policies and regulations, environmental monitoring and infrastructure maintenance and upgrades. Major actions completed so far include:
• Completion of the Municipal Emergency Measures Plan
• Flood Protection for Home Owners brochure
• Implementation of the zero-net inc
