WINNIPEG TOURISM

Known as the "cultural cradle of Canada," Winnipeg is Manitoba’s cosmopolitan capital city offering plenty of charm.  It is a four-season destination boasting a dazzling arts, theatre and indie music scene, as well as lip-smacking dining options to tantalize taste buds.

The city is transforming with more than $2 billion of investment in new infrastructure and attractions, such as the iconic Canadian Museum for Human Rights designed by Antoine Predock and the world-class Journey to Churchill polar bear exhibit at Assiniboine Park Zoo.

Winnipeg’s attractions educate, entertain and delight.  The Forks is the city’s meeting place with 54 sprawling acres of shopping, parkland, restaurants and entertainment, and a history that spans more than 6,000 years.  Explore Winnipeg’s diverse neighbourhoods, such as the historic Exchange District or the boho chic Osborne Village.  Marvel at the grace of Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet, hop aboard the Nonsuch—a replica trading ship at The Manitoba Museum, or visit the Winnipeg Art Gallery, home to the world’s largest collection of Inuit art.

Beyond city limits is trophy fishing and hunting, while sun seekers adore the white sand of Grand Beach—named one of North America’s top beaches, located an hour’s drive away on Lake Winnipeg.

Values Are Central To Employee Engagement
Jostle conducted a survey to explore how employees and executives view employee engagement, and shared our findings in a white paper. We observed the strongest predictors of engagement are the level of employee respect for leadership, pride in the company, feeling positive about workplace culture, and a sense that one’s work matters.

Organizational values are central to these predictors of engagement.  In a recent interview with WestJet cofounder Don Bell, we discovered how helping people understand and internalize values is key to creating a strong sense of purpose, alignment, and culture. Don also shared how he used a focus on people and stories about WestJet’s values to create an engaged workforce.

Innovative Approach to Professional Development

From vision to execution, the Town of Newmarket’s Progressive Leadership Development Program has created an environment for extraordinary public service.  The Town’s innovative approach includes all levels of the organization wherein employees are trained and developed to be empowered and effective as leaders and employees.

Newmarket believes that an engaged workforce has the ability to deliver even greater results than they believe possible. This means having employees who demonstrate both competency and commitment to the work they do, while delivering cost effective and relevant services to residents.

Out of the Town’s vision and mission statements, as well as the Council’s Strategic Priorities for 2014-2018, the Strategic Leadership Team developed their own vision – Creating an environment for extraordinary public service.

From that vision, the team created a People Plan, an Organizational Readiness Framework, a new Performance Partnership process and tools, and a new online learning portal for leadership development, as well as committing to a renewed effort for formal employee recognition.
Initiatives are linked to the vision and satisfy the needs of employees as they continuously develop. While each of the foregoing could be considered stand-alone initiatives, they are designed and created as interwoven, linked initiatives. This ensures the values of the organization are maintained and enhanced while delivering on the results.

Congratulations to the Town of Newmarket on this outstanding award!
