May 20:  Effective Council Staff Relations
Presenter: Tracey Lorenson, Paragon Strategic Services Ltd.

Do you have a fabulous relationship between Council and staff that you’re trying to maintain, would like to address small issues that are arising, or do you have significant conflict? Are you looking to establish positive relationships post election?  Regardless of the current state of your relationship this course will be relevant, and we will approach this specifically from the perspective of the senior staff in terms of
what they are able to do to build and maintain the relationship. Some of the topics we will address include respecting the roles of staff/elected officials, the use of experts to support decision making, handling “disrespectful” behavior, how to manage conflict between elected officials, senior staff and key stakeholders and how to handle ethical issues. We will also provide suggestions that will assist Mayors and Board Chairs in managing the elected/staff relationship.

CAMA Partner: Mental Health Commission of Canada

Right now in Canada, one in five Canadians will experience a mental health problem or illness each year. This week alone, half a million Canadians missed work because of a mental health issue. Just as many will miss work next week.  With numbers like these, it’s not surprising to learn that mental health has become the number one cause of disability claims in Canada. The personal toll on employees, and the financial costs to their employers is enormous. However, many of these costs can be avoided by ensuring a mentally healthy workplace. There are many things employers can do, such as download and adopt the National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace (www.csa.ca/z1003), or train managers and employees in Mental Health First Aid so they can spot problems early and provide initial help (www.mhfa.ca)  The Mental Health Commission of Canada has many tools and resources to help employers improve mental health in the workplace and reduce absenteeism, presenteeism and turnover.  CAMA Conference delegates are invited to join the Mental Health Commission team for breakfast on Tuesday May 27, 2014 to learn more.    Visit www.mentalhealthcommission.ca for additional information.

Leadership Tip: It's How You Act, Not Your Position -- Video
At its heart, leadership is about taking initiative and influencing those around you — and that doesn’t just apply to people at the top of an organizational hierarchy. Everyone in an organization can demonstrate leadership, and they should.   Pat Cormier, Kotter International says, “Leadership isn’t about position. It’s about how you behave and how you act.” Watch the video to see what else she has to say about leadership at all levels.
