A Message from ICMA President – Simon Farbrother

Dear CAMA Colleagues,

In September I was proud to become President of ICMA, the International City/County Management Association, at the conclusion of its 99th Annual Conference in Boston, Massachusetts.  I am writing you to encourage you to join ICMA (at a special dues rate available to CAMA members of only $135.00 US) if you are not already a member.

ICMA was founded nearly 100 years ago by a small group of city managers who shared a commitment to the preservation of the values and integrity of representative local government and local democracy and a dedication to the promotion of efficient and effective management of public services.  Those values of public service remain essential today, but the nature of our work (and our world) has transformed.  We have entered a complex, global, and virtual world with a rapidly accelerating pace of change.  Though our skill-set was once focused on administrative functions, our future successes will depend on our ability to motivate, empower, and communicate with our councils, staffs, and communities.

ICMA is prepared to help us get there.  The essential support ICMA provides includes leadership development around the evolving role of professional managers, telling the story of our profession through our Life, Well Run campaign, and facilitating an international dialogue on leading practices (and lessons learned).

Ideas and innovation are not limited by our municipal, county, provincial, or even national boundaries.  As you renew your membership in CAMA, I invite you to join the global dialogue and connect with ICMA.  Your CAMA membership combined with an ICMA membership will bring myriad opportunities to collaborate with like-minded colleagues, build a strong community, explore new roles for leaders, identify how to manage with uncertainty and change, and enhance your commitment and motivation as a local government professional.

By joining ICMA, you will be in good company; nearly 200 local government professionals from Canada participate as ICMA members and the organization represents over 6,000 professionals (and over 9,000 members total) from North America and around the world.  Through an affiliate agreement, CAMA members can join ICMA at a substantially reduced rate of $135.00 US dollars per person, an average savings of $800.00.

The member application form can be found on the CAMA website at the following link:  http://www.camacam.ca/en/resourcesGeneral/2013-11-icma-application.pdf

If you have questions about how a CAMA/ICMA membership can work for you, contact Jennifer Goodine, Executive Director, CAMA (866-771-2262; [email protected]), or Alison Richards, Senior Manager, Membership Recruitment, ICMA (202-962-3569; [email protected]).

I look forward to seeing you at the CAMA Conference in Niagara Falls in May 2014 and at the ICMA Conference in Charlotte in September 2014!

Sincerely,

Simon Farbrother
ICMA President and CAMA Past President
City Manager, Edmonton, Alberta

CAMA Long Service Recognition Awards Program

CAMA’s Long Service Recognition Awards Program recognizes and celebrates CAMA members’ dedication to public service and municipal management.  These awards are based on the number of years of full-time, paid employment in municipal government in a management capacity (a Chief Administrative Officer or reporting directly to a Chief Administrative Officer).  They are granted at ten years and given in five year increments and presented each Spring (based on the member’s number of years of service as of the previous calendar year – December 31st, 2013).

Who is eligible to receive a service award and how will they be recognized?
  • Any Regular Member of CAMA is eligible.  Membership dues must be current.
  • CAMA members who have completed ten and fifteen years of municipal service in a management capacity (a Chief Administrative Officer or reporting directly to a Chief Administrative Officer) will receive a recognition pin, appropriate to the number of years of service, with a letter from the CAMA President (and a copy to the head of Council) forwarded by the National Office via Canada Post.
  • CAMA members who have completed twenty years of municipal service (or more) in a management capacity (a Chief Administrative Officer or reporting to a Chief Administrative Officer) will receive a recognition pin, appropriate to the number of years of service and a letter from the CAMA President (with a copy to the head of Council).  This presentation will be made at a special ceremony at the Annual CAMA Conference with all travel costs being the responsibility of the recipient.  If the recipient is unable to attend the Conference the recognition pin and letter will be forwarded by the National Office via Canada Post.
  • All of the awards presented each year will be announced in a running slideshow at the Annual CAMA Conference and will also be featured in e-Brief and on the CAMA website.
How do I know if I am to receive an award?
Each year in January/February, CAMA generates a list of members whose records indicate that they will be eligible for service awards in that year.  For the calculations, CAMA assumes that members currently employed by municipal government will still be working for municipal government through the end of that calendar year.   If you are eligible to receive an award, you will be receiving notification in the near future from the CAMA National Office.

How are service awards calculated?

All full-time appointed service with municipal government counts towards a service award, even if that service was prior to actual membership with CAMA.  Please note that service does not have to be consecutive or with the same municipality.

Special Long Standing CAO Service Award

Any CAMA member that has been in the position of Chief Administrative Officer or City Manager for twenty-five years or more and who has been a member of CAMA for at least ten years (as of January 1st of the nomination year) will be recognized and presented with a special inscribed plaque signed by the CAMA President at a special ceremony at the CAMA Annual Conference (with all travel costs being the responsibility of the recipient).  A letter from the CAMA President will also be sent to the head of Council to be presented to the recipient either at a Council meeting or another form of recognition.  If the recipient is unable to attend the Conference, the plaque and letter will be forwarded by the National Office via Canada Post.

This award must be made by application by completing the form found on the CAMA website:  http://www.camacam.ca/en/programs/resources/ApplicationFormforLongServiceRecognitionAwards.pdf

Service does not have to be consecutive or with the same municipality.
