VANCOUVER - Catalyst Paper has elected to appeal a recent BC Supreme Court decsion regarding the validity of municipal taxes levied on its BC operations.
Catalyst filed its appeal with the BC Court of Appeals on Monday November 16th.
Four coastal communities - North Cowichan, Port Alberni, Campbell River, and Powell River - have been engaged in a dispute with Catalyst Paper regarding the industrial tax rates set by each municipality.
The first case to be heard in court was Catalyst Paper Corporation v. The Corporation of the District of North Cowichan. In a judgement released October 16th, Justice Peter Voith held that North Cowichan’s tax rate was valid.
