Our Parks Department has an immediate opening for an Assistant Irrigation Systems Worker to perform maintenance work on irrigation systems and turf areas as well as operate and program the municipality’s central control computerized irrigation system - the Toro Sentinel WMS Water Management System. In this position you will work independently or in conjunction with a superior to check the operation of, program and perform routine maintenance and mechanical repairs to hydraulic and electrical irrigation systems, sport field lighting, clocks and related equipment. You will perform a variety of cultivation and maintenance task on turf areas, sport fields and operate a variety of turf maintenance equipment, including a 1 ton van.

As an Assistant Irrigation Systems Worker, you will have considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, tools and equipment used in maintenance and repair of hydraulic and electric automatic and quick-coupling irrigation systems, used in turf cultivation and maintenance. You have experience performing a variety of irrigation systems maintenance and repair tasks, including installation. In addition, you have the ability to perform cultivation, maintenance and repair tasks to turf areas and to lay out sports fields according to required specifications. Further, you have a sound knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions related to the work; skill in the use and care of tools and equipment used in the work; and the ability to read, interpret and/or maintain a variety of records, maps, blueprints and manufacturers’ maintenance manuals related to the work. The ability to supervise the work of a small group of subordinates assisting in irrigation systems and turf maintenance duties would be considered an asset.

Your qualifications include completion of a trades/technical program or courses in irrigation and grass maintenance, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Familiarity with turf grass irrigation practices and computerized irrigation systems would be an asset. You must be capable of physical labouring duties. A valid BC driver’s license and an A.W.W.A. Cross Connection Certificate is required.

The salary for this unionized position is $25.39 per hour based on a 40 hour work week. The regular work week for this position is Thursday to Monday.
